In the project Island Universe, following the ancient Chinese notion of the five main elements of nature (fire, earth, water, metal, and wood), a group of artists was invited to explore elements of Governors Island: Water, Wind, Light, (Is)land, and People. Transforming the rooms, stairways, and hallways of a house into a series of installations, photo/video presentations, sculptures, murals, and performances, artists broadened the elements of Governors Island to range from its recreational present to the visible landscapes and landmarks in the collective memory of the city’s past. Island Universe invites reflection on the environment of the island and its history, provokes questions about the relationship between the people and nature, and elicits personal memory to form into a narrative within the framing structure of the island. The exhibition Island Universe explores the distinct characteristics of Governors Island, once nearly forgotten by the city’s citizens, which now provide a canvas and space for leisure, memory, reflection and creative transformation. Along with New York based artists, the exhibition presents a documentation of elements related art by artists from around the globe.

Nel progetto Island Universe, seguendo l'antica nozione cinese dei cinque elementi principali della natura (fuoco, terra, acqua, metallo e legno), un gruppo di artisti è stato invitato a esplorare elementi di Governors Island: acqua, vento, luce, (È) terra e persone. Trasformando le stanze, le scale e i corridoi di una casa in una serie di installazioni, presentazioni di foto / video, sculture, murali e spettacoli, gli artisti hanno ampliato gli elementi di Governors Island per spaziare dal presente ricreativo ai paesaggi visibili e ai punti di riferimento nel memoria collettiva del passato della città. Island Universe invita la riflessione sull'ambiente dell'isola e la sua storia, provoca interrogativi sul rapporto tra le persone e la natura, e induce la memoria personale a formare una narrazione all'interno della struttura inquadratura dell'isola. La mostra Island Universe esplora le caratteristiche distintive di Governors Island, una volta quasi dimenticate dai cittadini della città, che ora forniscono una tela e uno spazio per il tempo libero, la memoria, la riflessione e la trasformazione creativa. Insieme agli artisti di New York, la mostra presenta una documentazione di elementi relativi all'arte di artisti di tutto il mondo.
